Way To Spend Memorial Day Weekend In Delaware

By: Tye Richmond

It is the end of May and you who what that means… we are off from work on Monday baaaaby, because of Memorial Day.

Each year in the United States, Americans observe the Federal holiday, Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. It honors and remembers all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones who have passed away.

Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full staff for the remainder of the day.

When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country. Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation’s lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all. In the United States, Memorial Day also traditionally marks the beginning of summer.

Memorial Day weekend is a special time all across Delaware and provides plenty of activities to do this weekend and on Monday.

One thing to do in the City is Wilmington’s 2022 Memorial Day parade, to be held May 30. The area’s 155th consecutive observance of this day of remembrance for all who have given their life in service to our country. . The tradition began in 1868, when a group of New Castle County citizens formed a Memorial Day Committee to honor those who died in the Civil War. The purpose of the Memorial Day Parade Committee is to honor and commemorate the service men and women, -of all our nation’s wars, who have made the ultimate sacrifice to assure the freedom we all enjoy today. It’s so very important to pass on the tradition of honoring those who have given their lives for our country.

If you are looking for a beach trip then you can look no further. Go down to Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash located at 3357 Main Street, Bowers Beach

In its 10th year of celebration, the Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash is a free event taking place on Saturday and Sunday that is filled with fun events from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Live music and entertainment will be provided, treasure hunts and costume contests will be held and plenty of food, craft, and novelty vendors will be present.

To celebrate pirates of the Delaware Bay, there will be sword fights, nautical demonstrations, a staged bar fight and demonstrations in black powder. The two-day event will also celebrate the community’s oyster-harvesting heritage.

The last option is a sentimental favorite of mine and that is staying at home with your family and having a cookout. For some, memorial day is a time for family and friends to come over and enjoy each other’s company. Personally, I enjoy a nice memorial day at home with family because normally everybody is busy with work so it’s nice to have a good weekend with the family. Parades are nice and so is the beach but the older I get the more I’ve realized spending time with your loved ones is the most rewarding thing.
