Happy Mental Health Awareness Month

If you haven’t already heard, the entire month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. According to an article by parade.com, “May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It was started to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and to encourage those who need help to seek it—it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental Health Awareness Month was first honored in 1949.”

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) honors Mental Health Awareness Month each May, as do numerous other mental health support organizations.

After being locked down during the pandemic in 2020, I think everybody has realized that mental health is an important factor in people’s lives.

Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Lane Johnson said in a tweet. “We’re all going through something so make sure to check on your family & friends! 🙌 #MentalHealth Matters! #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth”

Everyone has different ways of dealing with their mental health, some go to therapy others read self-help books, journal, or meditate.

Personally, I don’t have any severe mental health issues or problems, but like Lane Johnson said we are all going through something at some point in time, and sometimes I have days where I’m going through a rough patch.

Here are a couple of things that help me clear my mind and reset in stressful situations. Hopefully, these ideas can help you out or maybe you have already used them in your life. One thing that has helped me, working out! Working out can include going to the gym, running, or playing a sport. Another thing that helps is listening to music, especially R&B/Soul and Gospel. Lastly, I like to take a drive and listen to music, that helps me clear my head.

People have different ways of dealing with their mental health, but all we can do is support each other and try to help as much as we can. As Lane Johnson said, make sure you check in on all your family and friends because sometimes, we don’t know what they are going through until it is too late.
