Delaware Public Archives to Host Program on Tracing Black Family Histories
The Delaware Public Archives in Dover will host its next First Saturday Program on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. The program, titled Tracing Black Family Histories at the Delaware Public Archives, will be presented by archivist Leah Greer and is free and open to the public.
Researching Black family history can involve unique challenges, especially when tracing ancestors back into the 19th century and earlier, before the passage of the 13th Amendment. This informative presentation will highlight the resources available at the Delaware Public Archives for researching Black family history in Delaware, spanning from present day records to some of the state’s earliest documentation.
Attendees will learn practical research strategies for uncovering information about formerly enslaved individuals, free Black communities, and family connections that may not be documented in traditional genealogical sources. The program is designed for beginners and experienced researchers alike who are interested in deepening their understanding of Black family history and archival research.
The event will take place at the Delaware Public Archives, located at 121 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. North in Dover.
