University Of Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Team Stuns No. 2 Seed Georgetown
By : Tye Richmond
The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team pulled off an unbelievable upset on Sunday night in the NCAA Lacrosse tournament. When the team defeated the No. 2 seed Georgetown Hoyas 10-9 on national television at rainy Cooper Field in Washington D.C.
The Blue Hens jumped out to an early lead thanks in part to five big saves from goalie Matt Kilkeary but needed four goals in the final frame, including the game-winner with just eight seconds left, to knock the #2 seed out.
In 2007, Delaware also knocked off the #2 seed in a first-round upset which propelled the Blue Hens to a Final Four appearance that year.
Delaware, which also reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 1999, will play Cornell, a 15-8 winner over Ohio State, in this Sunday’s quarterfinals at noon at Ohio State.
The recent success of the men’s lacrosse team just shows how well the University of Delaware athletics is performing as a whole. Recently, the women’s and men’s basketball teams won the CAA tournament and advanced to the NCAA basketball tournament. Unfortunately, the teams didn’t have the same success as the men’s lacrosse team in their respective tournaments. But it still shows the success and the turnaround of sports at Delaware.
According to a Delaware Online Article, “J.P. Ward’s goal with eight seconds left on Drew Lenkaitis’ feed proved decisive as the UD bench and a large rooting section began celebrating one of the school’s biggest victories in any sport.”
The article continued to say, “Georgetown (15-2) had won 11 straight. The Hoyas came into the game with NCAA Division I’s most stingy defense, allowing just 8.06 goals per game, but also were fifth nationally in scoring with 15.44 goals per game. Their nine goals Sunday were their second-fewest in a game this season, as busy Delaware goalie Kilkeary made 14 saves.”
The win was very impressive by Delaware but it is now time to focus on Cornell who will be a tough team too. The Blue Hens have already made us proud once fingers crossed, they can do it again.
