Delaware DMV Warns of Text Message Phishing Scam Targeting Drivers
Delawareans Urged Not to Click on Suspicious Text Message Links
The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is warning residents about a new text message phishing scam circulating statewide that falsely claims to be from the DMV.
According to officials, the scam uses Short Message Service (SMS) texts telling recipients they have an outstanding traffic violation and must click a link to pay the amount due by a certain date to avoid suspension of their vehicle registration or driving privileges.
DMV officials stress that these messages are fraudulent and designed to trick recipients into sending money while also stealing personal, private, and financial information.
DMV Will Never Demand Payment by Text or Email
The Delaware DMV urges residents not to click on any links requesting payment for unpaid traffic violations, toll violations, or account replenishments.
Officials emphasize that the Delaware DMV and E-ZPass Delaware will never contact customers by text or email demanding payment for violations.
“Please, no matter who the message is from, don’t click on a link to initiate a payment of any type unless you are confident the message is legitimate,” said DMV Director Amy Anthony. “When we see something like this our initial reaction is to panic and do whatever the message is asking of us. These scammers know that. They are counting on it. If it looks suspicious, it probably is. Take a moment and reread the message. Typically, you will see the red flags the second time around.”
What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Message
Anyone who receives a suspicious text message or email claiming to be from the DMV should report it to:
- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
- The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov
When reporting, residents should include the phone number the message came from and the website listed in the text.
Steps to Take If You Clicked a Scam Link
Anyone who clicked on a suspicious link or shared sensitive information should immediately:
- Secure personal and financial accounts
- Monitor bank and credit card statements
- Dispute any unfamiliar charges with financial institutions or credit card companies
