Delaware General Assembly Addresses Rising Electricity Costs

As the Delaware General Assembly continues its legislative session, lawmakers are taking steps to address the rising electricity costs affecting residents across the state. Delmarva Power customers have voiced concerns over soaring utility bills, with many experiencing increases of two or even three times their usual rates. The utility company attributes these spikes to record demand and cold temperatures.

On Wednesday, the Senate Environment, Energy, and Transportation Committee examined multiple proposals aimed at reforming how the Public Service Commission assesses utility costs. Delmarva Power contends that the current regulatory process already provides adequate oversight.

One key proposal, Senate Bill 60, seeks to cap annual capital expenditures for electric distribution companies at

$125 million. However, Delmarva Power cautions that such a cap could hinder necessary infrastructure improvements and slow progress toward Delaware’s long-term energy objectives.

Another major legislative effort, Senate Bill 61, focuses on enhancing transparency in PJM Interconnection’s decision-making processes. Additionally, lawmakers are considering proposals to remove Delaware from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and to explore nuclear energy as a viable alternative.

With public concern over energy costs growing, these legislative measures highlight ongoing efforts to balance affordability, oversight, and future energy needs in Delaware.
