Delaware is moving forward with a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom following a 15-6 Senate vote on Senate Bill 5. All 15 Democratic senators supported the measure, while Republican senators cast all opposing votes.
Senate Majority Leader Bryan Townsend emphasized the importance of enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution, citing the uncertainty of federal policies and the need for long-term protections. In contrast, Senator Bryant Richardson, an opponent of the bill, warned that the amendment could allow what he described as “the worst of the worst” abortion practices.
The proposed amendment aims to secure individual decision-making rights regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive health. However, to be fully enacted, it must pass additional legislative sessions in accordance with Delaware’s constitutional amendment process.
