Deshaun Watson Saga Continues

By: Tye Richmond

The Deshaun Watson saga continues in the NFL.

Here is a little back story of this Deshaun Watson situation for those who don’t know. Deshaun Watson, 26, is a star quarterback, one of the best in the N.F.L. at his position. This March, Watson was traded to the Cleveland Browns for three first-round draft picks and two additional picks. Watson will receive $230 million over five years, the most guaranteed money in league history.

All of this happened while “Twenty-four women accused Watson of assault in civil lawsuits filed in Harris County, Texas. The lawyer representing them, Tony Buzbee, said the women had largely echoed one another’s claims of sexual misconduct and coercive behavior against Watson.”

“Watson has reached settlements with all but one of the 24 women who filed civil lawsuits against him. Twenty suits were settled in June, and shortly before Robinson issued her ruling, Watson reached agreements with three more women, including Ashley Solis, a licensed massage therapist who filed the first claim against Watson in March 2021.”

After all of the settlements Watson was suspended for only 6 games and there was a lot of backlash because the people thought 6 games was too easy of a suspension. So now according to ESPN.com, “The NFL on Wednesday appealed the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, seeking a tougher penalty under the league’s personal conduct policy in the wake of disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson’s ruling Monday.”

“In a statement, the league said it notified the NFL Players Association that it would appeal and then filed its brief Wednesday afternoon.”

“The league said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will determine who will hear the appeal. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Goodell has the option to consider the appeal himself or can appoint a designee to do so.”

With the appeal by the NFL there is a possibility that Watson could be suspended for a year or more. If that is the case that would be two straight years of Deshuan Watson not playing in any NFL games. His career is already in flux after the lawsuits and settlements but that would be another nail in his NFL career coffin.
