Lawmakers Debate Banning Gender Transition Surgery for Minors
A Republican-backed bill to ban gender transition surgery for minors sparked intense debate Wednesday at Legislative Hall in Dover. Senate Bill 55, introduced by Senator Bryant Richardson, seeks to prohibit public funds or insurance from covering such procedures and could result in doctors losing their licenses for referring minors for treatment.
Supporters of the bill argue that minors should not make irreversible medical decisions. However, opponents, including Senate committee chair Marie Pinkney, contend that the legislation unfairly targets transgender youth and restricts access to necessary healthcare.
With Delaware’s legislature controlled by Democrats, the bill is unlikely to advance. However, Senator Pinkney emphasized that the discussion surrounding transgender rights and healthcare is far from over.
