Medical Waste Closes Yet Another Delaware Beach | DETV News
Lewes Beach Joins the DELMARVA Shutdown
DELAWARE — Delaware beaches risk closure after a troubling wave of medical waste began washing up on shore last Sunday. The waste reached the Delaware Bay, with reports of medical debris such as needles and small plastic trash in the water. Lewes beach has now joined the list of Delaware beaches closed to swimmers. Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, South Bethany, Fenwick Island, and Lewes beaches are currently closed.
Lewes Assistant City Manager Janet Reeves reported that medical items were first spotted on Lewes beach late Monday afternoon. Officials are looking into where the waste came from but have not shared any updates yet. Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution. Officials advise wearing shoes while on the beach and avoiding plastic debris.
Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is keeping a close eye on the situation. The DNREC also asks anyone who encounters medical waste on Delaware beaches to contact their Environmental Hotline at 800-662-8802. The department is committed to finding the source of the waste to ensure the beaches are safe for everyone.
