Riverfront East Project Set to Transform the Community
Revitalizing the Abandoned Land for New Growth
WILMINGTON, Del. – After years of anticipation, Wilmington’s $100+ million Riverfront East Project is finally moving forward. Riverfront East aims to mirror the successful development of the west side by transforming the 86-acre site into a vibrant area with new retail shops, residences, office space, and greenways. Now that officials have received the green light for the project, the process will begin this September.
What Does the Riverfront East Project Mean for the Community?
For years, the East Riverfront has progressively become a brownfield, meaning the area is now abandoned and underutilized. The Riverfront East Project is ready to reshape the land with a heavy focus on community benefit.
The current plan includes 4.7 million square feet purely for residential purposes, with 4,300 units ranging from single-family townhomes to apartments that face directly toward the water. The layout plans for 13.3 acres of public parks, greenery, and other scenic spaces to enhance unity and beauty in the community.
In light of the thousands of new potential residents, the project also incorporates 1.9 million square feet of office space. With more space for career development, the offices expect nearly 200 new jobs. Alongside the jobs the office brings, there is more job potential within the 350,000 square feet of retail space. From new restaurants, markets, and convenience stores, the East Riverfront will be a community that supports its people.
Looking Ahead
Starting in September, demolition of the rundown buildings begins marking the first steps of this transformative project. The first projected redevelopments will conclude in 2027.
