Lewes Polar Bear Plunge Postponed Due to Severe Weather

The 2026 Lewes Polar Bear Plunge has been officially postponed as a result of severe winter weather conditions, according to Special Olympics Delaware.

Event organizers, working closely with law enforcement and first responder partners, made the decision with participant, volunteer, athlete, and staff safety as the top priority.

The Lewes Polar Bear Plunge will now take place on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Rehoboth Beach.

All additional events tied to Plunge Weekend, including packet pickup in Newark, the 5K Run to the Plunge, and related activities, have also been rescheduled to the weekend of February 27 through March 1, 2026.

What Participants Need to Know:

Special Olympics Delaware shared that organizers hope to host all elements of the Plunge Weekend Festival as originally planned. Officials are currently working to confirm availability with sponsors, partners, and supporters who help make the additional events possible.

Participants who made overnight accommodations for the original weekend are encouraged to contact their lodging provider directly to cancel or reschedule reservations.

Special Olympics Delaware emphasized that safety has always been and will continue to be their top priority. The organization thanked participants, volunteers, athletes, and supporters for their patience, understanding, and continued commitment to supporting Special Olympics athletes across the state.
