It was a memorable evening Friday at St. George’s Technical High School for the return and jersey retirement of Wilmington native Nashon “Bizzy Bones” Hyland. Hyland, an NBA player for the Denver Nuggets, was selected with the 26th pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft out of VCU. He was back in town to celebrate his St. George’s Hawks #5 Jersey being retired forever. “This moment is bigger to me than when I got drafted,” Bones said. “Haven’t felt like this in a long time.”

Hyland grew up in Wilmington and played his High School ball at St George’s under head coach Rod Griffith. Hyland led the Hawks to some of the best finishes in school history, including two trips to the final four and a championship game appearance. He is also the school’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,900 points in his High School career. Hyland decided to continue his education and basketball career at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he played for two years under coach Mike Rhoades. During his sophomore campaign in 2021, Bones averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game on his way to being named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. He became a first-round pick later that July.

The ceremony featured speakers from Bones’ time at St George’s, the Mayor of Wilmington, Mike Purzycki, and his mother, Marshay Highland. It was a packed house filled with energy as “Bones Highland” chants filled the gym. Highland stayed after the ceremony to check out his former team in action.

The Hawks, boosted by the energy in the crowd, took an early 20-point lead and cruised to a 56-43 win over Havre De Grace with “Bizzy” sitting courtside. “Bones” will be in action Saturday to face the Philadelphia 76ers. He is 5th in the team in points per game, averaging 12.5 on the season to go along with two rebounds and three assists.
