Bird Flu Confirmed in Sussex County, Over 465,000 Chickens Culled

A highly pathogenic strain of bird flu has been detected in a poultry flock in Sussex County, marking the first confirmed case in Delaware this year. In response, state agencies have culled 465,625 chickens to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.

The affected property has been quarantined, and additional samples have been sent for further testing. Officials report that the outbreak initially appeared earlier this year among wild snow geese at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.

While the risk to humans remains low, health and agriculture officials urge poultry farmers and backyard flock owners to monitor their birds for signs of illness and strictly follow updated biosecurity measures.
