Julianne Murray on Losing the U.S. Attorney Job: Law or Politics? | The Agenda

Tonight on The Agenda, we ask a question with no easy answer:
Did Julianne Murray lose the U.S. Attorney’s office on the merits—or because Delaware politics decided she never should have had it at all?

Julianne Murray, former chair of the Delaware Republican Party, returns to the table for her third appearance. Appointed by President Trump as interim—and later acting—U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, her tenure was controversial from the start. Critics questioned her political background and lack of a traditional prosecutorial path. Supporters argued that U.S. attorneys are inherently political appointees and that Murray deserved to be judged on performance, not party affiliation.

Then the legal landscape shifted. A federal appeals court ruled a similar appointment in New Jersey unlawful, triggering action by Delaware’s federal judges. Within days, Murray’s deputy was appointed to the role—and Murray stepped aside.

She says she was removed not because of her record, but because of politics: the Senate’s blue-slip tradition, the refusal of Delaware’s Democratic senators to back her, and a system she believes prioritizes acceptability over independence.

Tonight, Julianne Murray makes that case in her own words—and we ask a bigger question that affects everyone:

If the top federal prosecutor in Delaware can be swept out in the crossfire between courts, the White House, and the Senate, what does “independent justice” really mean?
