Lisa Blunt Rochester and Sarah McBride Make History for Delaware
DELAWARE — On November 5th, Delaware cast its final ballots in a historic state election. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester and St. Senator Sarah McBride were elected into representative seats on the national stage. For Delaware, these women bring a new hope filled with progressive change. For our nation, they bring voices that have yet to be heard.
After eight years of serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (LBR) was not ready to give up on Delaware. In her run for U.S. Senate, Delawareans elected her with 56.43% of the votes in her favor. Following her official oath of office in January, LBR will be the first woman and the first person of color to represent Delaware in the Senate. LBR will join Senator Chris Coons in the Senate and continue to be a voice and an inspiration for Delaware.
“Delaware, I know that I know that I know, bright hope for our future is real. This campaign has been about your hopes, your dreams, your fears, and your aspirations. And my time in the Senate will always, always also be about you.” -Lisa Blunt Rochester, Acceptance Speech on November 5th
Another person who made history last night is the woman who will fill LBR’s empty House seat. With 57.7% of votes cast in her favor, St. Senator Sarah McBride is Delaware’s elected Representative in U.S. Congress. When she makes her way to D.C., Sarah McBride will be the first openly transgender person in the U.S. House of Representatives. McBride understands her significance to Delaware and America and promises to make decisions for the people without reservation.
“We know here in Delaware that a different politics is possible. A politics of hope, not of hate; a politics of grace, not of grievances; a politics of progress, not of pettiness. This is our charge as Delawareans and as Americans. And mine, as your next Representative.” -Sarah McBride, Acceptance Speech on November 5th
Delaware elected two powerful women to represent the state on the federal level. When January arrives, Delawareans will be proud to see LBR and McBride make strides for Delaware and the nation.
