DELAWARE COMMUTERS MAY SOON FIND THEMSELVES TRAVELING FROM JOSEPH BIDEN TO THOMAS CARPER, THANKS TO SENATE BILL 276.
THE LEGISLATION PROPOSES RENAMING THE NEWARK REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION CENTER TO THE SENATOR THOMAS R. CARPER STATION. THE MOVE HONORS CARPER’S ADVOCACY FOR INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT AND COMMUNITY CONNECTIVITY.
CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEWARK TRAIN STATION BEGAN IN 2018, ADJACENT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE’S BUSTLING CAMPUSES. CARPER’S EFFORTS SECURED FEDERAL FUNDING FOR BOTH THE WILMINGTON TRAIN STATION, NOW THE JOSEPH R. BIDEN TRAIN STATION, AND THE NEWARK PROJECT.
UPON COMPLETION, THE REVAMPED NEWARK STATION AIMS TO LINK AMTRAK AND SEPTA SERVICES WHILE POTENTIALLY CONNECTING TO MARYLAND’S MARC, FACILITATING REGIONAL TRAVEL FROM PHILADELPHIA TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
STATE SENATE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE DAVE SOKOLA, THE PRIME SPONSOR, EMPHASIZED CARPER’S DEDICATION TO PUBLIC GOOD AND INFRASTRUCTURE ENHANCEMENT. THE BILL IS SCHEDULED FOR REVIEW BY THE SENATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE BEFORE THE SESSION’S END ON JUNE 30.
