STATE SENATE APPROVES STUDENT BEHAVIOR TASK FORCE

The Delaware Senate is calling for a task force that will look into school discipline and student behavior.
Senate majority leader Bryan Townsend, a Glasgow Democrat, introduced a concurrent resolution Tuesday that would create the student behavior and school climate task force, tasked with looking at the causes and impact of student behavior issues on the student and their classmates.

The task force will also study teacher dissatisfaction, citing a 2022 American Psychological Association study that found nearly 50 percent of American teachers are thinking of leaving the job due to school climate.
And finally, it would study student discipline policies in other states for possible replication in Delaware.
The resolution is similar to one introduced by state senator Eric Buckson, a Dover Republican, which would have examined how student behavior affects teacher retention and academic performance for all students.
Buckson introduced his task force after Townsend’s passed the senate but it failed without democratic support.
If Townsend’s resolution passes the house, the task force would begin work no later than April 8 and have a report due on November 1.
