WILMINGTON TO CONSIDER NEW RULES FOR UNPAID PARKING TICKETS
Wilmington residents with unpaid parking tickets may soon have more time before the city boots or tows their vehicles. The city council is considering ordinance 24-023, which would increase the debt thresholds for these actions. If passed, the city could only boot vehicles with $300 in unpaid citations, up from $200, and tow vehicles with $600 in debt, up from $500.
Councilwoman Latisha Bracy supports the change, emphasizing it gives residents extra time. Wilmington finance director J. Brett Taylor noted that the city’s two “scofflaw vehicles” scan license plates to enforce these rules, often giving violators additional time. Councilwoman Zanthia Oliver expressed concern about higher thresholds leading to larger unpaid debts. Council president Trippi Congo suggested warnings instead of immediate enforcement. The ordinance will be considered by the full council on June 20.
