The Delaware State Fair Is Happening This Week!!

By: Tye Richmond

The Delaware State Fair started yesterday and will last all the way until July 30th the fair is In Harrington, Delaware where it has been since 1920.

The Delaware State Fair, as it is known today, began as an idea quietly conceived around a potbelly stove in the Harrington railroad station in 1919. The number of community-focused residents interested in starting this enterprise grew quickly as word of the plan leaked out. As the number who showed up for meetings grew, it became obvious that the railroad station could no longer serve as the meeting spot, and the group began to meet at the fire hall. The drive of these ambitious men helped formulate the Kent and Sussex County Fair which was incorporated in January 1920.

That entertainment started Thursday with a concert by Sam Hunt and his fusion of country music and modern R&B. Other concerts during this year’s fair include Nelly, Trace Adkins and Toby Mac.

There will be live entertainment for free during the fair, too, including family friendly comedy shows, pig racing, circus and camel shows, livestock extravaganzas — the list goes on.

Unlimited ride wristbands are available for the thrill-seekers online at a discount before the fair opens. On July 25, enjoy $2 rides and $2 select food and beverages for Monday Fun-day.

As you wander the grounds, you will be able to check out the several exhibits throughout the fair. Flower, garden vegetable, culinary, needlework, arts and crafts, children’s and 4-H competitive exhibits will be around the grounds.

Danny Aguilar, the assistant general manager & director of marketing with the Delaware State Fair, is encouraging fairgoers to bring water and take advantage of cooling spots across the fairgrounds.

“We always encourage people to plan ahead,” Aguilar said. “Go to our website and make sure they take a look at our schedule, try to plan ahead of time, and know what’s the best times to go. Showtimes, if you’re into coming to a concert. Also, bring water with you it’s okay to bring water, just ask no glass containers.”
