Wilmington Public Safety Conversation with Chief Campos | The Agenda
WILMINGTON, Del. – On this episode of The Agenda, the Wilmington Chief of Police, Chief Campos, joins host Kerwin Gaines. During the episode, the pair discuss Campos’s appointment as chief, the crime reduction strategies for Wilmington public safety, and the importance of community engagement.
Community Public Safety Initiative (CSPSI)
In their conversation, Chief Campos mentions the benefits of the CPSI in Wilmington. Labeled as the crime “interrupters” by Chief Campos, the CPSI goes directly into the community to provide resources. From walking kids home from school late at night to ensuring families have access to necessities, CPSI focuses on supporting Wilmington.
This past January, Chief Campos reinstated the Community Engagement Unit, which provides homes with direct access to a public officer for their district. By focusing on the issues that occur in daily life, the goal is to give a voice to citizens and build trust to prevent crime from escalating. “It may seem small and trivial, but that can turn into two people going at it, and it [could] escalate into violence,” Chief Campos states about the initiative’s preventative nature.
Campos also shares his vision for the future of the Wilmington Police Department. To further the same aim of building community trust, Chief Campos mentions widespread recruitment in an attempt to maintain an appropriate number of well-trained staff. Campos believes the community needs to unify and focus on public community safety initiatives to build a safer Wilmington.
