Lisa Maxwell, M.D., MHCDS, appointed President of ChristianaCare Medical Group
In her new role, Dr. Maxwell will lead efforts to improve every aspect of care for every person the ChristianaCare Medical Group touches. Her priorities include the adoption of population health measures, the embedding of health equity into care delivery and workforce development, further expansion of access points for patients, and the continuous enhancement of patient and caregiver experience.
Dr. Maxwell previously served as interim president for the Medical Group, where she helped lead the vaccine rollout for patients of ChristianaCare’s primary and specialty care practices. She also was instrumental in helping ChristianaCare accelerate its digital transformation, moving all primary and ambulatory care delivery to telehealth, enabling patients to get vital access to care, and mitigating the risks of exposure for both patients and caregivers.
“Dr. Maxwell is uniquely qualified to lead the Medical Group,” said Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH, president, and CEO of ChristianaCare. “Her passion for its mission and future vision was evident as she distinguished herself as the interim president. Since joining ChristianaCare in 2005, Dr. Maxwell has earned a reputation as a thoughtful, collaborative leader.”
Under Dr. Maxwell’s leadership, ChristianaCare will continue to develop new care models that transcend settings, promote value-based care, and improve the patient experience across the clinical enterprise.
“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I have had the privilege to witness the resolve of my Medical Group colleagues as we have served together with love and excellence,” Dr. Maxwell said. “I am honored to lead this dynamic group that is reshaping the future of care so that everyone we serve can achieve their best health.”
Dr. Maxwell has served as ChristianaCare’s chief learning officer since March 2019; she was named associate chief learning officer in 2016. Prior to that, she worked in both student and resident education, serving as the program director in Family Medicine, co-program director for the Emergency Medicine-Family Medicine Residency Program and director for Undergraduate Medical Education. She also has served as interim chair for the Department of Family & Community Medicine.
Dr. Maxwell completed her medical education at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Her residency training took place at Crozer-Keystone Family Medicine.
She joined ChristianaCare in 2005, completing a fellowship in faculty development with a focus on the care of underserved populations. In addition to leading efforts in clinical system education, she led efforts to establish the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University’s Delaware Branch Campus for medical students.
She received a Master of Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College in 2018.
She has held regional and local leadership positions in various organizations, including on the board of the Delaware Institute of Medical Education and Research (DIMER). She continues to practice primary care at ChristianaCare Primary Care at Darley Green.
